The charmed life of an HCI author - another pr dream scenario
This is going to be short and sweet but as Jackie Gleason used to say, “How sweet it is!”
Jess McCann, author of You Lost Him at Hello, should play the lottery. I’m sure she would win. Since working with her for the past few months, this thirty-something saleswoman turned dating guru has had unbelievable luck.
Remember, all that’s been said on this blog before about publicity – one of the key elements of publicity that can make your book is timing.
Jess has it.
At BookExpo America (BEA) this past June, Jess reported that on her plane ride north from D.C. to Los Angeles, who did she sit with? The book reviewer of USA Today! Now, I’ve worked with USA Today for my entire career and have NEVER met this woman. (We’re still waiting to hear from you!!!) There would be little chance that Jess would have ever had the opportunity to speak at length to this woman.
Go figure.
That’s a good enough story for me but it doesn’t end there. Get this one. Upon returning from New York to hometown D.C. by train, Jess once again finds herself in the company of two tv producers. One from Fox & Friends and the other from ABC Primetime. She could have made acquaintance with media folks of no consequence to her and her book, but both times she met folks who could either host Jess on their shows or review her book. And, each one could make a difference in her book sales.
Amazing, huh?
So, the moral of this story is, as in the case of Jess McCann, never travel or move around your world without looking up. Take a peek around and be friendly to those around you. You never know who you might be sitting next to.
And, Jess, keep traveling. It seems that’s where your good fortune occurs.
I’m expecting the next story to be a maritime event. Perhaps a cruise or a river rafting event. In the seat next to Oprah.
(see yesterday’s media clips of Jess McCann from The Washington Post and The Mike & Juliet Show )

Kim…..I’m with you all the way on this one. I was on my way to the Christian Book Fair to promote my book, THE WORRYWART’S PRAYER BOOK, and had a similar surprise:
My plane-mate was a manager at Beliefnet….. Then once at BEA, after traversing the aisles for hours and hours, and signing a gazillion copies of my book, THE JOY OF BEING FIFTY, I decided to stop at one of those massage-your-feet machines. Who was next to me? An editor from AARP Magazine.
My motto? Network or no work.
So, naturally, I’ll take this opportunity to plug my new book from HCI, PURR MORE, HISS LESS….HEAVENLY LESSONS I LEARNED FROM MY CAT……It’s just divine.

Love this! I once met an editor of a major publishing house standing in line in the ladies room at BEA - she bought several book titles from me. I connected with a TV producer while waiting in line for a tarot reading at another event. You just never know when or where LUCK will strike!
Amazing!
What a great lesson for a new author.
