Does clapping one hand make a sound in the forest — or can blogging in a vacuum bring traffic?

September 9, 2008 at 6:35 am

So far, the answer to the blogging part of that question is, no. I can’t vouch for the one-handed, applause inside a forest bit. But it does conjure up a a funny picture, a tad Monty Python-esque, don’t you think?

Ok, so I’ve been hammering out posts and photos on KWTB&B for about four months now. Today my web guy said it must be getting popular because of increasing spam. As hopeful as that may sound, it’s a little creepy when spam keeps coming from the same place. Over and over. Even when said web guy claims to have banned it from my feifdom.

What I’m noticing, and I have yet to decide if I will send out an alert about this post, is that unless I make some kind of marketing-like gesture, my blog attracts very little traffic. I know it’s too soon to get discouraged, and I am a promotional person by profession, but come on, can’t I just build it and they will come?

Apparently not. At least not for the time being.

If you’re reading this, it could be because of several reasons:

* maybe I sent out an alert to one of my mailing lists (you love getting these, right?)

* maybe I posted on another blog or two

* maybe you found me by recommendation

* or best of all, MAYBE YOU ARE LOOKING TO HIRE MY CONSULTING SERVICES, and hit the “blog” button on my home page.

(forgive me, that is my first blatant plug for the only part of this online venture that actually brings me cash)

It’s kind of like joining a multi-level marketing program. If you sign up, pay your dues, and just sit back, you will basically just lose the sign up fee. Even if you grab a few suckers to sign up under you, unless you continue to recruit or unless they do, you’re toast. It’s a constant cycling of energy. Except, in the case of MLM’s, I always felt like I had embarked on a form of coercion and one that could potentially cost me some friends. I leave MLM’s to the pyramid scheme aficionados. God bless ‘em.

Back to blogging. When I am giving advice, I never stop harping on how much an aspiring author or even a seasoned one must plug away at their promotional efforts. Whatever that means in the context of  your own campaign. In my case, here, I must shout the message far and wide that, “Kim Weiss Talks Books & Beyond” otherwise affectionately known as HelpMeWithMyBook is the new, cool kid on the block. Funny, informative, clever and wise, and even a tad artsy.

There, I said it. Now both of you sit down and wait your turn to comment.

Sending a smile and a hug.

About this Blog
I started this blog to create a "salon" type atmosphere where aspiring and seasoned authors, book lovers and lovers of the creative process can convene. My contribution is a mix of what's going on at my day job at HCI Books and beyond. And, beyond, in my imagination casts a pretty wide net.Creative posts are welcome but must fit in to the prevailing theme. (Say "book" a couple of times in your post, at least!) I'm PR Director at HCI for 14 years, consulting on the side, blogging, and studying operatic singing. I'm mother to Tito, Kiwi, Rashi and Mochi, three tweety birds and one puddy cat, respectively. I live high up over the beautiful intracoastal waterway and Atlantic ocean and I love snapping scenic photos on my iphone. I love the beach, and would be happy just pitching a tent there (with air conditioning). Welcome.
