Revelation for Tuesday morning – Andy Rooney is the original blogger

December 2, 2008 at 7:00 am

After watching Andy Rooney’s trademark ending to the most recent broadcast of 60 Minutes,  I ran to the office computer before I could forget my light bulb thought – Andy Rooney is the original, the first blogger. The difference between he and the rest of us is that he speaks his blog post via network television.  (Not to mention his brilliance, his humor, his candor, his skill. After all, he’s Andy Rooney)

The rest of us should pay attention.

All these years, Andy Rooney’s been reporting on things that matter with  his own personality injected into the broadcast. This past Sunday night he was spouting about saving money, but his subject matter has been known to span all over the map. The personality part is the antithesis of straight journalism but an essential aspect of our fair blogging. Fair and balanced, it is not, in both cases.

Perhaps we can take a lesson from what some refer to as CBS’s News’ “Resident Curmudgeon.” Let’s enjoy a few of Andy Rooney-isms::

“Vegetarian – that’s an old Indian word meaning ‘lousy hunter.”

“Did you ever hear one of these corny, positive messages on someone’s answering machine? ” Hi, it’s a great day and I’m out enjoying it right now. I hope you are too. The thought for the day is: “Share the love.” – Beep. – “Uh, yeah … this is the VD clinic calling … Speaking of being positive, your test results are back. Stop sharing the love.” ”

“If you smile when no one else is around, you really mean it.”

“I wish people spent less time praying and more time trying to solve the problems religion was created to help us endure.”

Andy Rooney. I fear he isn’t going to be around for too long. I’ll speak the obvious cliche, Rooney is a national treasure. International.

He’s a great role model for us rookies who spew our inner rumblings on a semi-regular to regular basis. Rooney’s known for commenting on things that matter, politics, and life issues. He is the inverse opposite of politically correct. I find that refreshing.

And, he has great eyebrows.

We might not display our props on our desks for a viewing audience to behold, but if we craft our language half has skillfully as he, we’re in good shape.

May you have success in channeling your inner Andy Rooney.

We should be so lucky.

p.s. Go to amazon and check out all the Andy Rooney books. What a great gift to give people who love to laugh. Know any of those?

About this Blog
I started this blog to create a "salon" type atmosphere where aspiring and seasoned authors, book lovers and lovers of the creative process can convene. My contribution is a mix of what's going on at my day job at HCI Books and beyond. And, beyond, in my imagination casts a pretty wide net.Creative posts are welcome but must fit in to the prevailing theme. (Say "book" a couple of times in your post, at least!) I'm PR Director at HCI for 14 years, consulting on the side, blogging, and studying operatic singing. I'm mother to Tito, Kiwi, Rashi and Mochi, three tweety birds and one puddy cat, respectively. I live high up over the beautiful intracoastal waterway and Atlantic ocean and I love snapping scenic photos on my iphone. I love the beach, and would be happy just pitching a tent there (with air conditioning). Welcome.
