Something Beyond Greatness

April 2, 2009 at 10:25 am

I don’t have a lot of time but I thought it would be a good idea to scratch out a little note about something exciting that I’m working on. The book’s title is: Something Beyond Greatness: Conversations with a Man of Science & A Woman of God. Even more exciting is that the subjects of the book, Dadi Janki and Humberto Maturana are meeting in New York on Mother’s Day weekend in a live conversation about the relationship between spirituality and science. (If you are a journalist or an interested party, write me asap)

coming in June - previewing in NY on Mother's Day weened

Well, I’m honored to  know the Woman of God and am excited to meet the man of science. Judy Rodgers & Gayatri Naraine, two selfless and tireless advocates of peace, global dialogue and the greater good of the planet have put a great idea into this book.

Something Beyond Greatness isn’t officially out until June, but preview copies will be available at the May event.

Dadi Janki, in charge of the spiritual side of the book’s conversation is an  amazing woman. Picture a tiny woman not 5 feet tall gracefully trotting around the globe at age 92:

ABOUT DADI  JANKI

In 1937, at age 21, Dadi Jank became a founding member of Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU) establishing numerous BK centres throughout India and around the world. The organization now exists in nearly 100 countries. Dadi Janki , now  engages with people from the grass roots to government leaders worldwide.

Now for a bit on Maturana – it’s not just something beyond greatness here, it’s really beyond (my) comprehension!

ABOUT HUMBERTO MATURANA

Humberto Maturana [1928] – Biologist, Cybernetician, Scientist – invented his theory of autopoiesis following in the pathways of Bateson, Wittgenstein, the social ‘ricorso’ of Vico, the self-production notion of Paul Weiss, and many others. He has spent his career elaborating this theory within a biological research program in his laboratory in Santiago [above which was written ‘Experimental Epistemology Lab’]. Known world-wide as Humberto {except in Italy where he is ‘Umberto’}, he continues to elaborate his theory generating experimental evidence for the thesis that reality is a consensual communal construction while appearing to be ‘objectively’ existing. The notion of ‘objectivity’ is replaced by that of ‘constructivism’.

I guess we can safely say that she’s a living saint and he’s pretty smart. Knowing Judy and Gayatri both personally and professionally, I know a lot of greatness has gone into their book and will manifest in the coming event.

There’s much more to say about the co-authors, the speakers, and the Brahma Kumaris organization. Words like: integrity, charity, selflessness, peace, caring, generosity and devotion come to mind. Remember my post about my weekend at Peace Village last September at the “Images and Voices of Hope” retreat? These are the same people.

I’ll be back with more about the book and the event but do let me know if you have an interest in joining us in New York. Just meeting Dadi Janki will be an experience that will forever touch you.

That’s a promise.

Gotta go….

ABOUT THE BRAHMA KUMARIS

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University is a family of individuals from all walks of life,  committed to spiritual growth and personal transformation, believing them essential in creating a peaceful and just world.

p.s. HCI has been the publisher of several BK books. How lucky are we?

About this Blog
I started this blog to create a "salon" type atmosphere where aspiring and seasoned authors, book lovers and lovers of the creative process can convene. My contribution is a mix of what's going on at my day job at HCI Books and beyond. And, beyond, in my imagination casts a pretty wide net.Creative posts are welcome but must fit in to the prevailing theme. (Say "book" a couple of times in your post, at least!) I'm PR Director at HCI for 14 years, consulting on the side, blogging, and studying operatic singing. I'm mother to Tito, Kiwi, Rashi and Mochi, three tweety birds and one puddy cat, respectively. I live high up over the beautiful intracoastal waterway and Atlantic ocean and I love snapping scenic photos on my iphone. I love the beach, and would be happy just pitching a tent there (with air conditioning). Welcome.
