In the company of do-gooders, a nice place to be

November 18, 2009 at 7:13 am

Good doo-ers, do-gooders, however you describe the people in this world that understand how to put others first, I’ve been lucky to work for a company that thrives on doing good deeds and the concept of contribution.

Today, I want to share news of a very selfless project that one of HCI’s authors is undertaking.

Tom Wilson, who you’ve seen in pictures on my blog from last weekend’s book fair, is using his book, Zig-zagging, as a tool to make a difference. As a tribute to his late wife Susan,  who he lost to breast cancer, Tom is  donating 100% of his book royalties from the day commemorating Susan’s passing (November 18) to the day that marks her birthday  (January 19).

Wait, there’s more.

Tom is partnering with an organization that can help him put muscle behind his message. The partner is LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation who’s credo is:  ”we unite people to fight cancer believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything.”

Starting today, he’s launching “Ziggy’s Million Dollar Livestrong Challenge”. The goal is to sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 250,000 books during this two month window to raise a million dollars for  Livestrong.

I call that more than doing good. It’s doing something great.

According to his book’s subtitle, Ziggy saved Tom’s life in his hours of need while dealing with the insidious disease that took his life partner. In turn, Tom Wilson is looking to save lives of the others who may be suffering from cancer. Help them in their fight.

Like I said before, my good fortune is to be part a business that believes that we must share whatever blessings we’re given by giving back. Many charity organizations have benefited from proceeds that came from HCI titles and many others have benefited from the generosity of the man at the helm.

Any way you slice it, it’s just a spectacular lovefest that’s incorporated in the fabric of the company.

Who exactly am I cheering on here?

Tom Wilson, HCI, everyone and anyone who doesn’t keep it all for themselves.

If you don’t have a copy of it already, now would be a good time to click on the link and add Zig-zagging: Loving Madly, Losing Badly…How Ziggy Saved My Life to your library.

You’ll get a book and someone with cancer will get a leg up.

Sounds like a deal to me.

I have read this book and I thought it was excellent. I have talked with author Tom Wilson and he is genuinely kind-hearted and sincerely concerned about making a positive impact in the world. Great book, great effort, great cause.

As for the do-gooders… you know what they say, Kim… like attracts like.

This is an excellent post, and I am moved to get my copy of Tom Wilson’s Zig-Zagging today. I also clicked on the link you provided to Livestrong and appreciated reading more about it.

Such a touching, moving story of Tom and his wife Susan. I’m so sorry she lost her battle with breast cancer and yet inspired that through his enormous grief, Tom was moved to share his story and give to others.

It’s also uplifting to hear about HCI’s commitment to helping others as well. Thanks for posting this!
