Guest post: Talkin’ “ego” with one of my favorite book editors (a poem)

April 30, 2010 at 10:02 am

This poem was actually commissioned in the HCI hallway after super-star editor, Carol Killman Rosenberg, uttered the first line in normal conversation. “Go write a poem,” I told her, and to my surprise, this wonderful little piece appeared on my computer screen not one hour later. That’s talent! And, by the way, I LOVE the poem. Enjoy this Friday treat:

My Ego

by Carol Killman Rosenberg

I want to smoke, drink, pop pills, and shop.
My EGO is growing, and it just won’t stop.

Threatened by the concept of being laid to rest,
My EGO is fighting to be the self-proclaimed best.

The more I read about transcending the thing,
The tighter it holds and the more it clings.

My EGO makes me human and keeps me tied down
Avoiding the clouds, preferring the ground.

I want to be rid of it, but then who would I be?
My EGO says without it, there’d be no me.

I am more than my EGO, at least that’s what I’ve been told.
Is it me or my EGO who thinks this is getting old?

It’s no surprise…she’s always been brilliant. Take it from me, her first writing partner.

I knew she was a poet–that’s why I married her.
