The day my father would turn ninety-four
Had he lived past the shy side of middle-age
Thick black Hungarian hair turned white
Maybe gone altogether

Dementia eating his brain

After a lifeless body tries to get up from his bed
To serve my sister and I frozen Stouffer’s chicken
Green beans and powdery mashed potatoes
That day in June when his heart had had enough
Scene over
Fatherless for the balance
Ringing in my ear this morning
I hear
Crumbs are not enough
