November 17, 2010 at 8:18 am

Today Show, Good Morning America, O magazine, Redbook and Time. Oh, how I love my job! Tasty recommendations: Akendiz (Turkish) for lunch, Bar 6 (Moroccan chicken, oh my!) and Five Points for dinner. SoHo, NoHo, Flatiron and Chelsea. Let me count the ways…

Crumbs are not enough (for dad)

November 14, 2010 at 7:38 pm

It finally hit me

The day my father would turn ninety-four

Had he lived past the shy side of middle-age

Thick black Hungarian hair turned white

Maybe gone altogether

Sharp as a tack (or)

Dementia eating his brain

I can never know

Anything that comes after  age ten

After a lifeless body tries to get up from his bed

To serve my sister and I frozen Stouffer’s chicken

Green beans and powdery mashed potatoes

That day in June when his heart had had enough

Scene over

Fatherless for the balance

Ringing in my ear this morning

I hear

Crumbs are not enough

Not enough

Not enough

Not enough

Eat from the bountiful table

You are not of peasant stock

At least this generation

What is he saying

From the father place I crafted in my brain

Where someone watches over me

My version of wisdom

He knew I’d remember him today

Even made up

I like this story

T-shirts were not good enough

For my sixteen-year-old sister to wear

On a date when he was around

Crumbs are not enough

I got it

Happy birthday

Wherever you are.

Wallow and weep

or tickle the head of a tiny blue bird

Write and lament

or scratch the belly of an orange cat

Reflect and ruminate

or sprinkle the plants on the terrace with tap water

Talk and recapitulate

or marvel at the diffusion of light from this morning’s sunrise

The sky is too blue today

to look away

The air too crisp

to breathe shallow breaths

Dark thoughts tempt me to

close the windows

to stay inside

and remember all the ways to feel bad

Nature hums in the background

with other things in store for this day

Please don’t make me yell, she says

All you have to do is show up,

(Look, listen, and feel)

I will do the rest
